Wanda Henson, co-founder of Camp Sister Spirit, left behind a legacy of fierce love, resilience, and strength – a woman who helped carve out safe, affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ women and allies for decades in Ovett, MS, alongside her partner Brenda. The couple owned a Lesbian, feminist, metaphysical bookstore in Gulfport, MS called Southern Wild Sisters, which was more than a store; their compassion extended far beyond the LGBTQIA+ community but to any service organization that was helping people in need. Wanda and Brenda also had deep ties to the women’s music festival circuit and envisioned something similar in MS. What started as an idea grew into something much larger: Camp Sister Spirit, a safe haven for women, especially lesbians. “Camp Sister Spirit happened because organizations quit renting to us when they found out we were mostly Lesbians.” The camp quickly became more than a gathering space. “It was great to see all these women getting empowered, creating a safe space and people came from all over the US,” Robin Morgan says. “The neighbors and the law enforcement wanted us to go away with their ignorance and their guns.” Robin emphasized that Wanda’s lasting legacy is found in the lives she touched. “When I first started going to the bookstore I hoped they wouldn’t send me packing because I was so quiet and I didn’t think I had anything of value to offer. Instead they knew the importance of showing up. At some point you figure out what you are there for. Just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be done. Women are powerful and that includes me.” Brenda died in 2008, and Wanda joined her in 2025.

Love Latonia is a multi-talented and multi-faceted two-spirited woman of trans experience who serves as the Director of Awakening Love. Their mission is to empower and support our communities by advocating for their rights, providing harm reduction strategies, and promoting emotional wellness practices, while creating a safe and liberating environment where individuals can thrive and access the resources they need. In August 2025, the Awakening Love Drop-in Center opened its door, the first of its kind not only in Jackson, but all of Mississippi! Awakening Love is offering not only a space for gathering necessary resources, and gathering authentically in community, but also a space for transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive individuals to receive emergency services and receive the support they need, from the community that directly understands their needs. Love Latonia also works as a Program Specialist for CARE4ME Services’ CARE4Women. This program includes Evolving Voices, which focuses on connecting all women with social and emotional support services and addressing barriers to care. She serves on various boards and committees while advocating for others whose voices may be silenced. Love has been entertaining as an Illusionist/Artist for nearly 30 years and counting. Entertainment is her art form of ministry that enlightens individuals to feel free, understood, and loved. In April of 2025, Love was crowned Miss Black Trans International!
In the words of Barack Obama: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

Jensen Luke Matar is a man of many hats. He is a proud Christian, husband, father and friend to many. He is the volunteer Director of TRANS Program – a trans led and state-wide 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that comprehensively serves the transgender and non-binary community of Mississippi, a Paralegal at the Law Firm, Bufete (Boo-fet-tay) Legal (Lay-gal) – Mississippi’s only trans-owned and operated law firm, Business Owner of Jensen Custom Prints – offering custom design and print services, and Owner of Human Love Apparel – a LGBTQ focused apparel line. Jensen also serves on the Steering Committee for HRC Mississippi and on the Board for LGBTQ Fund of Mississippi. Jensen’s work in advocacy sprung from his personal experiences of discrimination as a trans man – early in his transition. What began with him advocating for himself, led to unintentional policy change in the workplace, followed by 10 years of service to the transgender and non-binary community of Mississippi. He has achieved many “firsts” for the state of Mississippi, such as writing the first state-wide newspaper publication about trans issues, organizing the first Mississippi Legislative Hearing on Trans Rights and organizing Mississippi’s first publicly acknowledged Trans Day of Visibility event. But, his greatest achievement is witnessing positive life change, as result of his consistent and humble service. Through community relations, leadership development, state-wide organizing, legal assistance, education, advocacy and business, Jensen has been able to lead a shift in culture around trans narratives and is a vital contributor in the fight for LGBTQ rights, in Mississippi.

Brandon Andrews was born and raised in small-town south Mississippi. Through the years, he proudly laid his musical roots in beautiful New Orleans, Louisiana. From singing his first solos in elementary school, to growing up performing in church, Brandon has always had a gift to deliver a contagious joy and energy with a side dish of love and encouragement that continues to excite and inspire audiences of all backgrounds. In 2017, Brandon went public with his intense struggle with alcoholism and addiction. Brandon now claims sobriety as a lifelong journey, continued one day at time. Sharing his story, experience, strength, and hope is something Brandon finds necessary as a means to continue his path of progress rather than perfection. Brandon is a proud and unashamed member of the LGBT+ community and continues to share his story, both struggles and victories, boldly, openly, and honestly and always seasoned with love. Brandon prides himself in writing a variety of music – some songs that bring joy, some songs that gently tug at your heart strings – but always songs that echo LOVE! In December of 2020, Brandon joined forces with power-house vocalist and New Orleans fixture, Amy Trail. The two co-wrote, co-produced, and released their song “Missing You At Christmas.” The heartwarming tune made its radio debut on the famed New Orleans station, WWOZ FM, and saw great success with well over 5,000 streams within a week of its release. To kick off 2021, Brandon introduced his new sound which has been fittingly described as “New Orleans Pop.” Brandon’s reintroduction release is the uplifting and energetic bop, “Love Is Love,” which was produced by his lifelong friend and co-creator, Los Angeles based artist, LEEANNA.

It wouldn’t be difficult to categorize Kicking with over-used, hip but otherwise irrelevant genre buzzwords, but that would be doing a disservice to the sound. Kicking draws influence from 90’s alt rock and grunge giants to the more subdued elements of shoegaze and post punk, with traces of hardcore and riotgrrl still showing proudly through, all while trying to create music that is authentic to the individual members. Kicking is a volume dream. Kicking is a bunch of grungy, shoegazing punx. Kicking is a band from Jackson, Mississippi.

Destiny B. (bleu-jean) is a 24-year-old multidisciplinary artist bred and born in Jackson, Mississippi. Though she typically focuses on writing and performing poetry, she also has her hands in the wardrobe styling, songwriting, and event curating bowl! Her career began a mere two years ago performing at open mics and planning events in the art community with an organization that she’s proud to be part of called Thee Groove Collective. Through writing, she regained a sense of self, motivation, and confidence to be more than she could’ve ever dreamed. With this newfound confidence, she was reborn again as “bleu-jean,” paying homage to her late grandmother Betty “Jean” and her love for fashion, denim specifically. Her powerful and charisma-fueled words are formed through unique experiences in her day-to-day life. She writes and performs in a way that is relatable enough for people to understand who she is while also leaving space for people to see themselves in her work. In her own words: “I was destined to reach people without touching them and open their eyes to what they couldn’t see before. My purpose was made apparently clear the first time I stepped on stage. Finding that purpose made life worth enjoying, not just living.”

DJ KND is a man of many names, a jack of many trades. He also goes by the name Kydd. He is a fast-rising young talent coming out of Jackson, Mississippi, and he is a member of Thee Groove Collective. With his love for everything music, he intends to use the medium as a universal language to connect people from all walks of life and bring back fun.

The Drag Story Hour with family friendly crafts included over 20 parents and children interacting with the story and engaging in a creative activity provided by the educators.
Admittedly, we scaled back 2025's festival for several reasons: the rising costs of event rentals and fees, the decline in major sponsorships and individual donations; rising political concerns and safety. We chose to focus on Mississippi and southern region artists for our 5th year. By doing so, we were able to save funds for 2026 to begin with a head-start!
